a variety of vegetables are on display at a market

The ALLERGY Protocol:

  1. Select a Sensitive Area: Choose a spot with minimal hair and thin skin, such as the inner thigh or the abdomen.

  2. Prepare the Sample: Take a very small amount of the food item. If it is a solid (like a vegetable or meat), mash a tiny piece with a drop of water to create a soft paste.

  3. Apply the Patch: Gently rub the sample onto the selected area. You only need a pea-sized amount.

  4. Wait and Observe: Leave the sample on the skin for 15 to 30 minutes. Watch your pet to ensure they don't lick the area (you can hold them or distract them during this time).

  5. Evaluate: Wipe the area clean with a damp, unscented cloth and examine the skin.

What to Look For:

  • A "Pass": The skin remains normal. No redness, no swelling, and your pet is not scratching or rubbing the area.

  • A "Fail": If you see redness (erythema), swelling, hives, or if your pet shows intense itching or discomfort in that specific spot, do not feed that item. It is a clear sign of a sensitivity.

Important Safety Disclaimer:

This patch test is a screening tool, not a diagnostic medical procedure.

If your pet has a history of anaphylaxis or severe food allergies, NEVER perform these tests at home without consulting your veterinarian first. If you observe any swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, or lethargy after any exposure to a new substance, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately.

CHEAT SHEET

Proteins & Hydration

Carnivores & Omnivores -Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, and certain reptiles

Note: All meats must be unseasoned and boneless unless feeding a balanced raw protocol. Always limit secreting organs (liver/kidney) to 10% or less of the total diet to avoid vitamin toxicity.

Raw Meaty Bones (RMBs) & Recreational Bones

⚠️ CRITICAL SAFETY RULES: NEVER feed cooked bones. Cooked bones splinter and can cause fatal internal damage. Always feed 100% raw. Supervise all chewing. Match the bone size to the pet to prevent choking (gulpers) or fractured teeth (heavy chewers).

How to Prepare & Serve RAW MEATY BONES:

  • Option 1: Whole & Intact (For Dental Health & Enrichment)

The pet does the work. This cleans teeth and exercises the jaw.

The Golden Rule: The bone must be larger than the pet's mouth so they are forced to chew it, preventing them from gulping it whole. Always supervise closely.

  • The Removal Rule: The goal is not for the pet to consume the hard, weight-bearing bone itself. They are only meant to strip off the attached skin, meat, and cartilage. The moment those soft tissues are gone and the bone is stripped bare, it must be taken away immediately to prevent tooth fractures. Always supervise closely.

  • Option 2: Ground (For Seniors, Tiny Pets, or Anxious Guardians)

Using a heavy-duty meat grinder, grind the raw bone and meat together. This delivers all the vital calcium and nutrients with zero choking risk. Perfect for ferrets, cats, or older dogs with missing teeth.

  • Option 3: Segmented/Crushed.

Using heavy kitchen shears or a meat mallet to break the joints (e.g., snipping a chicken wing into three pieces) to make it easier for cats and small dogs to crunch through safely.
